Securing Your Residential Care Facility and Why You Must Prioritize Mobile Access Control Now

Discover how access control modernization can help your residential care facility overcome unique security challenges without disrupting daily operations.

Overseeing a residential care facility is incredibly challenging in many ways. But perhaps one of the most concerning threats to any residential assisted living home is the heightened security risk the facility incurs.

Vulnerable residents, sensitive data, and expensive equipment turn the average residence care home into an enticing target for nefarious actors. This is compounded by the fact that you’re likely managing a nearly continuous influx of visitors and medical personnel. It makes the idea of preventing access to potential security threats completely overwhelming.

However, recent advancements in access control technology through innovative enterprises like Sentry Interactive aim to tackle this challenge for critical service providers like residential facilities. These new entry systems can mitigate the looming threats you’re managing without disrupting the daily task of caring for residents.

With this in mind, let’s walk through the fundamentals of access management controls.

Understanding the Vulnerabilities of Residential Care Facilities

There are several entirely unique security challenges that your residential care facility likely faces. For instance, residents directing violent outbursts at staff members is of primary concern.

In the same vein, patient wandering is another dangerous yet practically inevitable consideration. This issue requires the use of access control solutions. After all, no residential care facility has the staffing capacity to monitor every patient 24/7.

The theft of patient valuables or medical equipment is also a risk due to the high volume of visitors. Although in this regard, the potential theft from medicine dispensaries by staff, visitors, or residents is also of paramount concern.

The combination of all these threats requires a visitor management system that traces access to critical spaces and generates a searchable audit trail.

The Role of Access Control in Residential Care Security

Door access control systems provide an added layer of security to every entry and exit point between spaces in a residential care facility. Only authorized individuals will be able to pass through particular entrance points. This empowers you to make visitor, resident, and staff management more comprehensive.

Essentially, access control systems let you control the movement of everyone within a building. Improving the overall security of residential care homes.

The best visitor management systems are able to vastly improve building security without inconveniencing authorized entrants. For instance, credentials can be issued directly to the user’s mobile device, allowing them to pass secure points without a keycard or badge.

Sentry Interactive’s encrypted and cloud-based mobile access software doesn’t just protect data privacy. It also allows managers to instantly revoke or customize individual permissions.

Tool Tip: With Sentry Mobile Access, you can remotely grant a digital time-limited visitor pass from anywhere, at any time, to any access point. For facilities like resident care homes, this can help you easily manage visitor traffic.

Tailoring Access Control to Resident Needs

It takes systemic flexibility to strike a balance between the unique mobility needs of residents and your facility’s robust security requirements. This often means finding a way to prioritize convenience when it comes to entry systems for residents’ private spaces. And yet, public areas must maintain tight security measures. This way, residents can have as much independence as possible without threatening their well-being.

To pull off such a balance, your residential care facility needs a flexible solution that’s easy to implement. For instance, open-source API access control solutions like Sentry Interactive’s mobile access software can integrate with multiple major legacy brand systems that might already be installed in the facility, meaning there’s no disruption to existing infrastructure. Additionally, if the facility has a space management platform that helps to manage patient and staff movements, Sentry Mobile Access can integrate into it to provide mobile access capabilities via its open SDK.

Flexible Access Schedules

With a frictionless access control system for your residential care facility, you can set personalized access times for caregivers, family visits, or personal outings. This enables you to foster an environment that respects the independence of residents by providing a sense of control and comfort.

In having the ability to customize access to meet individual requirements, security systems also create a safer environment. This way, stronger security won’t compromise the quality of residents’ lives, but rather enhance it.

Tool Tip: With Sentry Interactive’s Mobile Access Control, you get granular control of authorized access. Contractors and service providers can be given temporary access during specific hours, while high-security areas like private residences and pharmacies remain restricted.

Emergency Access Protocols

Emergency protocols for access controls are critical for your residential care facility. Access control systems should include secure emergency protocols that allow authorized personnel swift entry during crises while maintaining overall security. This ensures the ability to evacuate immediately in case of medical emergencies, fires, or other urgent situations.

Privacy Considerations

To respect residents’ privacy, access logs and personal data must be handled discreetly. Implement strict data protection policies to comply with regulations and protect sensitive medical information.

Of course, personal data like keyless entry logs and medical information should only be accessible to authorized personnel. To this end, robust cybersecurity safeguards are a critical component of preventing breaches.

Tool Tip: Outfit your facility with mobile access controls that leverage technology with the highest levels of encryption to secure information stored in the cloud. This way, you’re creating a secure environment that protects your residents’ right to privacy.

Sourcing Advanced Access Controls for a Residential Care Facility

It’s vital to strike a balance between the need for a robust security system and the obligation to respect the autonomy and independence of your residents. Implementing an advanced access control system can help you achieve this. Sourcing a quality system is essential.
