Access beyond the door: How can readerless mobile credentials be used beyond door access?

Readerless mobile access credentials don’t stop at door access. By identifying who a user is, when the interaction happens, and where it takes place, a readerless mobile access credential can trigger a wide range of actions beyond entry, all secured with the highest asymmetric encryption levels. Once a mobile credential proves someone’s identity at one touchpoint, that same tap can authenticate them at any other location where a Sentry Smart Access Tile is placed.

For time-limited, payment-linked use cases such as EV charging or storage unit access, readerless mobile access credentials can synchronize with the booked time and activate automatically for a set period, they can also be restricted by a geofence or IP address for additional security. 

Access across multiple different systems is also unified with interoperable mobile credentials. This avoids the need to issue multiple credentials for different access points. For example, a user can use the same mobile access credential they use to store their bike, print documents, and access their locker, that they use to access the door to their building and office.

The role of the Sentry Smart Access Tile

A Sentry Smart Access Tile is made up of an ultra-slim acrylic tile with a passive NFC chip on the back and a QR code printed on the front to provide two options of mobile credential access. They don’t require any wiring or batteries therefore can be placed anywhere inside or outside for various use cases. The Sentry Smart Access Tile doesn’t store information its passive, its only function is to identify a location and provide an NFC pairing with the mobile credential, that acts as the active reader to identify a user.  

The true intelligence lives in Sentry Interactive’s cloud service, this is where user authentication happens and where user, time, and location data is stored. The Sentry’s cloud service can integrate and communicate with third party cloud platforms securely to synchronize access information.   

When a user taps their mobile phone on a Sentry Smart Access Tile using NFC technology, the mobile credential sends a signal up to the cloud service that asks the question: has this user been provisioned for this access? The Sentry Interactive cloud service then talks to the third party cloud platform if there is one, which authenticates the request, and accepts or denies access, the same way it would at a door, just applied to a different use case.

Where else can readerless mobile credentials work?

A Sentry Smart Access Tile can sit almost anywhere a system needs to confirm identity before doing something. A few examples of what that looks like in practice:

Shared equipment and tool checkout. A Sentry Smart Access Tile on a storage cabinet or lockup authenticates the person taking out a set of tools or other items, logging who has it, at what time, and when it’s due back, without a sign-out sheet.

Locker and storage unit access. In a gym, coworking space, or self-storage facility, a Sentry Smart Access Tile on a locker door ties usage directly to the person’s credential rather than a shared code that gets passed around.

Meeting room and desk booking. Tapping a Sentry Smart Access Tile at a booked room or hot desk confirms the reservation and the identity of the person using it, closing the gap between what’s booked on a calendar and who’s actually sitting there.

Time and attendance at a workstation. A Sentry Smart Access Tile at a workbench or service counter lets staff clock in or log task completion with a tap, replacing manual entry with a timestamped, identity-verified record.

Passwordless login to shared devices. A Sentry Smart Access Tile next to a shared terminal or kiosk lets a staff member authenticate into a session without typing a password, useful anywhere multiple people rotate through the same device during a shift.

Vending and self-service dispensing. A Sentry Smart Access Tile on a supply cabinet or vending unit in a clinical or industrial setting restricts dispensing to authorized users and creates a record of who accessed what.

EV charging bay release. A Sentry Smart Access Tile at a charging point authenticates the driver before the connector unlocks or the session starts, tying every charge to a verified user instead of an app login or RFID fob issued separately from the building’s access system.

Bike, scooter, and pool vehicle rental. A Sentry Smart Access Tile on a bike rack, scooter dock, or shared vehicle releases the lock only for the person who reserved it, so a fleet of shared vehicles can run on the same credential as the building’s doors rather than its own separate rental system.

Parking barrier and gate release. A Sentry Smart Access Tile at a barrier or gate authenticates a resident or permit holder on approach, replacing a separate parking fob with the same credential used everywhere else on site.

Package and delivery locker pickup. A Sentry Smart Access Tile at a parcel locker bank confirms the recipient’s identity before releasing the correct compartment, closing the loop between a delivery notification and who’s actually collecting it.

Each of these replaces a manual process, a sign-out sheet, a shared PIN, a paper log, with a tap that’s already tied to a verified identity, and the data from that tap flows straight into whatever system is tracking bookings, inventory, or attendance.

Why this matters operationally

The value isn’t the tap itself, it’s what unifying these touchpoints under one readerless mobile access credential removes. Fewer separate codes and cards means less hardware to install and maintain. Fewer manual logs means fewer gaps in the record of who did what and when. And because every trigger authenticates against the same identity, organizations get one consistent view of activity across doors, equipment, rooms, and devices, instead of a patchwork of systems that don’t talk to each other.

The security layer underneath

Every one of these interactions runs on the same asymmetric cryptography that protects door access. Each readerless mobile access credential has a public/private key pair: the public key verifies identity, while the private key stays in the mobile device’s secure enclave and never leaves it. When a phone taps a Sentry Smart Access Tile, the two exchange a challenge-response handshake rather than a static code, which is what makes the credential resistant to cloning, interception, or replay, regardless of whether it’s unlocking a door or releasing a locker.

In summary

A Sentry Smart Access Tile paired with Sentry Interactive’s readerless mobile access credential turns any NFC-enabled access point into a verified, logged interaction. Doors were just the first application. Equipment checkout, lockers, EV charging points , shared-device logins, and dispensing cabinets can all run on the same mobile credential, the same cloud authentication, and the same security model, giving organizations one identity verification and asymmetrically encrypted security layer instead of several disconnected ones.

Hébert began his career at Honeywell International where he held several leadership positions including Managing Director for the Automation and Controls business in France and eventually President of the NexWatch Corporation from 1999-2002. Hébert led HID Global as President & CEO over a transformative 12-year period from 2002-2015, where he provided strategic guidance and grew the business tenfold through a mix of strong organic and acquisitive growth. Prior to Sentry, Brent has spun up successful startups and led high-performing teams for some of the biggest global, Fortune 500 companies, including ARRIS, Conerco, Motive Communications, SeaChange International, and IBM. Brent holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Louisiana. He also is the committee Chairman and Program Director for a non-profit organization responsible for the rollout of smart cards for physicians and first responders.
